Overview

The Bells of Steel Open Trap Bar is a highly versatile strength-training tool engineered for deadlifts, rows, carries, lunges, squats, RDLs, presses, and dozens of accessory movements—without beating up your back in the process.

Its open design, integrated deadlift jack, dual handle heights with neutral grip placement, compact and stable build make it easier to use, easier to load, and easier to control than traditional hex bars. Built from high-strength steel with fully knurled handles, it delivers premium quality and performance at a home-gym-friendly price — offering unmatched value compared to competitors' alternatives.

Whether you're brand new, chasing PRs, or getting back under the bar after a "life happened" phase, this bar is a must-have tool in your training arsenal.

Why Choose an Open Trap Bar?

Open trap bars have become the modern standard because they solve problems older hex bars can't:

  • Improved movement freedom (lunges, rows, carries, split squats)
  • Safer mechanics for beginners learning hinge patterns
  • Easier loading due to the built-in jack designs
  • Better ergonomics for tall, long-limbed, or mobility-limited lifters
  • Full-body use instead of just deadlifts

The BOS Open Trap Bar takes all of these advantages and delivers them with balanced geometry, premium knurling, and durability — without the inflated price tag.

Who It's For

Beginners
The high handles, stable frame, and balanced center-mass make learning the deadlift safer and more controlled. Beginners also benefit from the open design for lunges and split squats.

Intermediate Lifters
Switch quickly between lifts using the dual-handle setup and easy loading. Ideal for accessory work programmed between barbell lifts.

Advanced Lifters & Strength Athletes
Rated for 700 lbs with knurled handles and a rigid frame designed for maximal pulls. Perfect for heavy deadlifts, RDLs, shrugs, and loaded carries.

Small-Space & Garage Gym Users
A single tool that replaces multiple specialty training tools without requiring extra storage space. The open design gives you more movement variety in tight spaces.

Coaches, Trainers & Home-Gym Power Users
One bar supports hinge mechanics, bilateral work, rows, carries, gait patterns, and accessory-strength programming for a wide range of clients.

Ease of Use

Built-In Deadlift Jack
Tilt the bar onto its feet, and slide plates on effortlessly. This drastically reduces setup fatigue and keeps the bar stable while loading heavy weights.

Easy to Maneuver
The open design reduces awkwardness during movement transitions. The centered load path makes every movement feel smoother and more predictable.

Beginner-Friendly Learning Curve
High handles + stable frame + good knurl = ideal for teaching hinge mechanics or returning to pulling after injury.

Value & Cost Efficiency

Buying separate bars for deadlifts, farmer carries, rows, and split squats quickly becomes expensive. The Open Trap Bar replaces:

  • Hex bar
  • Carry handles
  • Row bar
  • Farmer carry implements
  • Multiple specialty attachments
Durability & Longevity

Premium Build Quality
This bar is engineered to endure years of high-volume training cycles. Welds are strong, sleeves spin smoothly, and the frame is built to maintain alignment under repeated loading.

Improved Packaging
Updated packaging protects your bar during transport, so it arrives shiny and new—the way it should.

Low-Maintenance Finish
Simply wipe down between sessions to resist moisture and sweat buildup.

Engineering & Construction

Balanced, Stable Geometry
The bar's centerline is engineered for balance, reducing forward roll and side-to-side wobble during carries, rows, and heavy pulls. Multiple reviewers specifically highlight how unexpectedly balanced the bar feels compared to cheaper models.

High-Strength Steel Frame
Built from rigid steel designed to stay stable under load. The bar is rated to 700 lbs and maintains its shape even during heavy deadlifts.

Dual Handle Heights
Low handles replicate the standard barbell pulling height, while high handles offer reduced range of motion, easier setup for beginners, and safer pulls for lifters with mobility limitations.

Fully Knurled Handles
Both handle sets are knurled end-to-end for a consistent, confident grip without being overly aggressive. Reviewers frequently call out the knurling as one of the standout features.

Durable, Protective Finish
A reinforced coating helps limit chips, scuffs, and wear from daily use. Improved packaging helps prevent dents and dings during transport.

Sleeves for Standard Plates
Compatible with Olympic-style plates (50 mm sleeves), including bumper plates, steel plates, and change plates.

Full-Body Versatility

Unlike closed hex bars that feel "locked in," the open side unlocks dozens of movements:

Lower Body

  • Deadlifts
  • RDLs

  • Lunges & reverse lunges
  • Split squats
  • Step-ups
  • Trap-bar jumps

    Great bar. Adds versatility 🔥

Great bar. Simple yet effective. As a garage gym owner we try to find ways to add versatility and this does the job. I can now go heavier with walking or reverse lunges, Bulgarian split squats without loading my spine, weighted marches , and more. And all with the deadlift jack making it easier to load and unload plates especially when you’re halfway or in the end of your workout and the last thing you want to do is remove a bunch of weight off the bar lol. Grip feels good. Build is great. Highly recommend

Thanks for the awesome review, David! We love hearing how the Open Trap Bar is expanding the versatility in your garage gym. Walking lunges, reverse lunges, Bulgarian split squats, weighted marches and more without loading the spine is exactly where this bar shines.

Glad to hear the built in deadlift jack is making plate changes easier too. When you are deep into a workout, saving a little effort on loading and unloading goes a long way. Great to know the grip and overall build are hitting the mark as well.

Thanks for the recommendation and for putting the bar to work in your training!

    Yours in strength,

    The B.o.S. Crew. 💪

    Solid and Compact

I purchased this on sale as they were offering 30% off. The trap bar is very nice and the added jack feature is a plus. The knurling is perfect on both sides. Not overly aggressive. It's very easy to store. Only downside was shipping as my box showed up with a hole and one of the sleeves was hanging out. The sleeve area has some scratches and chips from shipping.

    Great versatile bar

This was a great deal and so much better than a generic trap bar. The knurling is perfect, love the built-in jack. Deadlifts with the bar are great but so are seal rows, farmer walks, and lunges. My only issue was during shipping the box and styrofoam broke and the sleeves got banged up a little bit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Open Trap Bar/ Hex Bar different from a traditional hex bar?

Unlike a closed hex bar, the Open Trap Bar features an open-front design allowing for movements like lunges, carries, and even split squats without the frame getting in the way. It’s more versatile while still delivering the joint-friendly benefits trap bars are known for.

What are the weight and dimensions of the Open Trap Bar/ Hex Bar?

The Open Trap Bar/ Hex Bar weighs 47 lb (21.3 kg) and features 25mm handle diameters, for a strong grip with every lift. The loadable sleeve length is designed to fit standard Olympic plates with 2" (50mm) sleeves.

What is the weight capacity of this trap bar?

This bar has a 700 lb weight capacity, making it suitable for serious strength training, including heavy deadlifts and carries, and fits up to 7 iron plates on 9.7” (247mm) loadable sleeves. Whether you're a beginner building foundational strength or an experienced lifter pulling heavy loads, it’s built to handle progressive overload with confidence.

What is the width between the handles?

The handles are approximately 23.6 inches (60 cm) apart. This spacing provides a comfortable neutral grip for most lifters while keeping the load centered for stable deadlifts and carries.

Does the Open Trap Bar/ Hex Bar have different handle heights?

Yes. The bar features both standard and elevated (high) handles, allowing you to adjust your pulling height. Just flip it over and use the handles that fit your desired height. The high handles can help reduce range of motion, which may make deadlifts more accessible for beginners or lifters working around mobility limitations.

Is the Open Trap Bar/ Hex Bar rackable?

No, the Open Trap Bar/ Hex Bar is not rackable. Its compact frame is intentionally designed to save space, making it ideal for home and garage gyms where every inch of real estate matters.

What type of plates does this bar work with?

The Open Trap Bar/ Hex Bar is designed for Olympic-sized weight plates with 2" (50mm) center holes. It’s compatible with iron plates, bumper plates, and most specialty plates designed to fit Olympic sleeves.

What exercises can I do with the Open Trap Bar/ Hex Bar?

In addition to trap bar deadlifts, you can perform shrugs, farmer’s carries, lunges, squats, rows, and even pressing variations. The open-front design increases movement versatility compared to traditional hex bars, making it a strong all-in-one bar for garage gyms.

Is this a good option for beginners?

Yes. Trap bar deadlifts are often easier to learn than straight bar deadlifts because the neutral grip and centered load may help reduce lower back strain. The elevated handles also make it easier to start from a higher position while building confidence and strength.

What warranty and shipping options apply?

The Open Trap Bar/ Hex Bar is backed by Bells of Steel’s Limited Lifetime warranty (see full details here). Shipping rates and delivery timelines are available at checkout or via the Shipping Policy page.
